Seixas sets his sights on Pogacar: “The goal is not to take Pogacar’s place when…”
Paul Seixas is the new star of world cycling. Last year he surprised everyone with a steady rise that saw him play a leading role in the final part of the season at the European Championships, despite being only 18 years old.
For this reason, this season’s goal can only be to start winning, as he has already begun to do, in order to reach the level of the very best as soon as possible and beat them on the road.
Seixas spoke precisely about this, and about his current level, in a recent interview with Le Dauphiné Libéré. Here are his words:
“For now, I still need to improve. Pogačar, Evenepoel and Vingegaard are still on a higher level. But at the moment I want to see how much I’ve improved compared to last year, when I already had the chance to race against them. I think that if you’re afraid, you’ve already lost. I’m not afraid — it’s too strong a word and it doesn’t describe what I feel at the start of a race. I would say respect, I have a lot of respect for these riders. In any case, I want to give 100% against the best. You have to win when all the strongest riders are there. That’s the most important and rewarding thing for a rider with a competitive spirit. The goal is not to take Pogacar’s place when he’s no longer there, but to beat him one day.”
