Ganna wins the time trial but is already thinking about Sanremo: “I don’t want…”
Filippo Ganna opens the 2026 Tirreno-Adriatico in the most convincing way possible: he wins the opening time trial and takes the leader’s jersey.
Yet, at the finish line, the Ineos Grenadiers rider almost seems to hold back the enthusiasm. Milan–San Remo is already on his mind, and he has no intention of forgetting about it.
The form is there, but Ganna is thinking about Sanremo
“The form is good and the legs are turning well,” admits the rider from Piedmont, “but this year I don’t want to push too hard and arrive tired at Sanremo.”
A direct reference to what happened last year, when he fought until the final day for the overall victory in the Race of the Two Seas, eventually finishing second thanks to the time bonuses on the final stage.
Arensman as an extra card
The strategy for this week seems more focused on management than on attacking. Also because teammate Thymen Arensman, as Ganna himself pointed out, “is going very strong” and sits in a good position in the general classification, giving Ineos more than one card to play.
The jersey won’t be given up
That said, Ganna has no intention of stepping aside. “I don’t want to lose the jersey. I’ll fight to keep it and maybe I’d also like to win another stage. We’re here with big ambitions as a team.”
A difficult balance to maintain between the desire to perform well at Tirreno and the need to arrive fresh at Sanremo. “We’ll decide day by day,” he concluded.
