Nike will not pay 50 million euros to Visma | Lease a Bike: here’s why

Contrary to what several Italian news outlets have reported, the figures of the Nike–Visma deal are nowhere near 50 million euros per year

Between yesterday and today, many Italian media outlets have reported the news—originally revealed by WielerFlits—about Nike joining Visma | Lease a Bike as a new sponsor. We already covered the topic in yesterday’s article (click here to read it), but some Italian newspapers have cited absurd and unrealistic figures for the sponsorship.

According to these reports, the American multinational is supposedly going to pay the Dutch team 50 million euros per year—an astronomical figure in the world of cycling. However, that amount actually represents the total income from all of Visma | Lease a Bike’s sponsors, making it impossible for a mere jersey sponsor (not even a technical one) to contribute such a sum, which would be enough to fund one of the best teams in the world.

For context, in 2024, according to L’Équipe, Soudal–QuickStep had a budget of 25–30 million euros, UAE Team Emirates operated on 55–60 million euros, while Intermarché–Wanty (the lowest among WorldTour teams) had between 12 and 18 million euros. It’s likely that the misinformation stems from a misinterpretation of a CyclingNews article, where the reference was to the team’s total budget, not to the value of the Nike deal.
