EF Pro Cycling loses its team leader less than one week before the start of the Tour de France. Ecuadorian rider Richard Carapaz, third in the last Giro d’Italia, won’t be at the start in France. Instead, he will begin preparing over the coming weeks with the goal of winning the Vuelta a España, according to his team.

Carapaz has been sidelined by a gastrointestinal infection developed while training at home in Ecuador, which will force him to take complete rest for a few weeks. These are the words of the team’s CEO, Jonathan Vaughters:

“We’re all gutted for Richard. He came out of the Giro with amazing form and was setting career-high power numbers in training. He sacrificed so much to get to that level, so the timing really couldn’t be worse. But knowing him, this setback will only motivate him to come back stronger.”
