Pogacar Vingegaard

Just a few days remain before the start of the Tour de France, and all eyes are naturally on the rivalry between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. While yesterday we reported the Slovenian’s words leading up to the Tour, today it’s the Dane’s turn, interviewed by TeleDeporte.

ON POGACAR – “To win the Tour, you have to be at Pogacar’s level. And I think he’ll be even stronger in this Tour than in previous years. That obviously pushes me to be at my absolute best, better than ever. I know he is probably one of the best in cycling history. So, to match him, you have to make sacrifices every day. Then, when I train, I just focus on myself and on how to reach my peak performance. In the end, I know that if I want to win the Tour de France, I have to be stronger than Pogacar.”

HOW IS HE FEELING? – “I feel good. My physical condition has been improving steadily. I didn’t focus on progressing in just one area, but on improving all aspects. I’ve tried to refine my power under stress and convert it into better performances. I think I’ve grown a bit in everything. The Tour route? There are many key stages, and some are very tough, between the Pyrenees and the Alps, as well as the one through the Massif Central. In the first week, there will also be wind and some finishes on tricky ramps. There won’t be many moments where we can relax.”

THE TIME TRIALS IN THE TOUR – “To be honest, I prefer the second one, even if it could be very punishing if you’re not in good shape. The first will be very important: 33 kilometers, all flat… I had to do specific training on the time trial bike for that stage. But I believe the uphill time trial can create big differences.”

THE FINISH IN MONTMARTRE – “It could be dangerous. There’s a lot of talk about safety in cycling, but routing a Tour stage there can pose many risks. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, we saw that there were tons of people lining the roads, but that day there were about 15 riders still in the race. This year there will be 115, if not more, and each of them could be very tired. Yes, I think it will be very dangerous.”
