What will Ciccone do at the Vuelta a España? Will he aim for the podium or stage wins? His words
Giulio Ciccone’s statements ahead of the upcoming Vuelta a España, where he could be one of the main contenders
Ciccone’s return to racing after his bad crash at the Giro d’Italia was perfect, with two victories: one at the Clásica de San Sebastián and another at the Vuelta a Burgos. Thanks to these wins, and also to his excellent results in the months before the injury, Ciccone will be one of the riders most closely watched at the Vuelta a España.
Some believe he should focus on the general classification, while others think he should go after as many stage wins as possible (perhaps some prestigious ones on this year’s incredible finishes) and try to win the King of the Mountains jersey—the only one missing from the three Grand Tours. He spoke about this topic in an interview yesterday with Ciro Scognamiglio of La Gazzetta dello Sport. Here are some of the most interesting questions (and answers, of course); you’ll find the link to the full interview at the end:
At the Vuelta, what will your goals be?
“Stage wins, and the mountains jersey after those of the Giro and the Tour. The GC… I would really love it, without Pogacar it could be an opportunity to fight for the podium, but for one reason or another, I’ve never managed to do it. And sometimes, you aim high, chasing something that never comes… Better to go for what suits me more. And then…”
Yes?
“The best feeling is winning. Raising your arms is ten thousand times stronger than fighting for the general classification. I don’t want to belittle the GC, but if I had to choose between finishing fourth at the Vuelta, or winning a stage and standing on the podium in Madrid with the polka-dot jersey… I have no doubts.”
For your signature gesture of throwing the sunglasses after a victory, you were fined by the UCI. At Burgos we saw the finger-and-thumb sign, which you share with Sinner and Giovinazzi. Will you repeat it?
“I’ll improvise. At Burgos I had a bit more time to think. I’m sorry about the sunglasses, people loved it, and everyone’s disappointed. Who knows, if I got a really thrilling win at the Vuelta, maybe I’d risk paying the fine…”
