Evenepoel’s words on the World Championships: from the problems with the UAE block to possible long-range attacks
The Belgian spoke out at the press conference about how, in his view, Sunday’s World Championships might unfold
In addition to Tadej Pogacar, there is one rider in particular who will be most closely watched in Sunday’s road race: Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian, fresh off his victory—indeed domination—in the time trial, is also strongly targeting the road race. Evenepoel knows how to win a World Championship, even on the road, and with his current form he can only be considered one of the main favorites.
A year ago, he finished fifth in the road race, after winning double Olympic gold. Now his sensations are better than a year ago, and the goal is victory. These were his words at today’s press conference:
LONG-RANGE ATTACK? – “Last year we hadn’t discussed a long-range attack scenario, and at the time we were a bit caught off guard, but we’ll definitely discuss it now. Mount Kigali is a critical point and we can’t allow ourselves to be unprepared.”
RACE SCENARIO – “You reach that climb after four hours of racing. Many riders will already be struggling there. From that moment on, the fun begins. After that, there can’t be too many doubts. You’ve seen it with the young riders as well. Before you even realize it, you’re back at the finish line and the final lap begins. Anything can happen, but I still expect a war of attrition and elimination.”
THE UAE BLOCK – “They (Vine and Del Toro, for example) will definitely help each other. They did it last year as well. There’s no reason to make a problem out of it. The important thing will be to have as few UAE riders as possible up front, but that will be difficult because they’re in form. I have to rely on my own strength and try to read the race well.”
