Ardennes Classics, Giro d’Italia… Kemna’s words on Gaffuri’s possible race calendar and on his approach

Next season will mark the WorldTour debut of Mattia Gaffuri, and right from the start we may see him taking part in important races as a domestique for Picnic PostNL’s leaders.

This was confirmed by Kemna, the head coach of the Dutch team, who explained to Wielerflits the strengths and weaknesses of the former Swatt Club rider, outlining how the team intends to work with him to help him improve over the coming years. As early as 2026, he could become an important support rider for Onley and Poole with a view toward the Ardennes Classics and general classifications, although it remains to be seen whether he will already be ready for the Giro.

These were Kemna’s words:

“Mattia is very intelligent; I would almost call him a professor. His strong point is climbing. Simplifying a task can give him a lot of experience. His experience on the road, in fact, is not very extensive at the moment. Mattia is someone who thinks a lot and constantly about things, a bit like a student.

By making things simpler for him and explaining clearly why we approach certain situations in a certain way, he really thrives on that. Mattia is joining us as a rider for general classifications: that will more or less be his role.”

ON THE GIRO — “At the moment, I cannot say with certainty that Mattia will ride the Giro d’Italia. As we are thinking about it now, there could be a spot for him. But maybe he won’t be ready yet. We have to wait and see.”
