Alberto Contador: “Pogačar or Merckx? It’s a constant question, but it’s…”

Cycling legend Alberto Contador was interviewed by Marca and shared his opinion both on this past season and on two very hot topics in recent months.

The first is the comparison between Pogačar and Merckx; the second is the possible reduction of some Grand Tours to just 2 weeks of racing. Here’s what he had to say:

ON THIS SEASON – “We’ve seen incredible spectacle. Pogačar was clearly superior during the Tour. He’s an athlete who is redefining the sport. What he did at the World Championships was also insane. Usually you race like that when you’re not afraid of losing. It’s hard to ask him and UAE to repeat a season like this. Every time it becomes harder for them to surprise us. All that’s missing is for them to attack during the neutral zone.”

THE COMPARISON – “Pogačar or Merckx? It’s a constant question, but it’s a mistake to approach it like that. They’re different eras. Today, half of the peloton is competitive. We shouldn’t compare the numbers. Let’s enjoy Pogačar. He’s unique. Every race with him is a gift. It’s hard to say who could stop him at the 2026 Tour. There’s Vingegaard. He has won it twice, he’s meticulous, cold, absolutely professional. If anyone can take the win away from Tadej, it’s him.”

REDUCING GRAND TOURS TO 2 WEEKS – “I don’t agree. It would mean losing part of their essence. I was a rider who exploded in the third week. How can you compare two weeks with three? This is where the romanticism and epicness lie—where only the chosen ones survive.”
