“I still believe I could have won the Tour” — Vingegaard speaks freely

After last year’s injury, at this year’s Tour we saw one of the best Jonas Vingegaard ever — the numbers prove it. The Dane in fact admitted that he had returned to his pre-crash power numbers, when he was in the best shape of his life.

This wasn’t enough to win the Tour de France, but according to the Dane the chances to triumph were there, and what made the difference were only a few difficult days. These were his words in a recent interview:

“The Tour was perhaps the first time since my crash in 2024 that I more or less returned to the same power numbers. It took a lot to get there. It was a big crash and recovering was harder than I thought. At this year’s Tour we wanted to race aggressively to put pressure on Pogačar. Maybe, in hindsight, we could have done something differently, but it’s always easy to be smart afterwards. I enjoyed racing more on feeling, more aggressively. You don’t have to race like that all the time, but for once it was nice to try.

“I still believe I could have won. A few difficult days made a big difference. In the end, though, the best rider won. This should give us motivation for next year. People say that at Visma | Lease a Bike we are robotic. I think we showed that we follow our instinct. If one day I feel great, I go for the stage win. Sometimes you don’t need a plan, but courage.”
