Evenepoel irritated by fellow Belgians: “Sometimes strange tactics…”

After failing to retain his national champion title—despite being one of the protagonists of the race—Remco Evenepoel didn’t hold back in criticizing his breakaway companions, showing clear irritation with their attitude both during the race and in post-race interviews.

It was not an easy day for the Olympic champion, who suffered a crash in the early stages and then faced very little cooperation from the others in the group. This allowed to a great Tim Wellens (to whom Remco immediately offered his congratulations, to be fair) to break away solo with 40 km to go and never be caught. Here’s what the day’s runner-up had to say:
“There was little cooperation. Sitting on the wheel always works, but not if you just spin it pointlessly. Sometimes the tactics are strange, but you can’t win a race like that. With Jasper Philipsen we could have caught up, but he had no more energy. Tim Wellens rode very well and stayed strong at the front. He’s a great winner and a great champion for our country”.

Regarding the crash, Evenepoel was honest, admitting it didn’t influence the result:
“The group crashed in front of me. In the end, nothing serious happened, but maybe I lost a bit of energy chasing back. Still, that didn’t make the difference today”.

Now Evenepoel’s next race will be the Tour de France:
“This was my last race before the Tour. It was hot and I raced aggressively, so it was a good and intense final training session. I’m not someone who gets stressed easily before a race. Now I’ll enjoy a few more days of rest and then it’s full gas for three weeks”.
