Sagan is not convinced by modern cycling? “I’m not saying it’s boring, but…”
The Slovak rider’s words on modern cycling and today’s races
Cycling from 10 years ago seems completely different from today’s, and yet only a handful of years have passed and some of the protagonists are still the same. Peter Sagan commented on this change while speaking to Marca.
The Slovak rider, a three-time world champion, is not exactly convinced by modern cycling, with races decided far too early in his view. Here are his words on the matter, following a comment about the possible longevity of today’s champions (who are so “squeezed”):
ON MODERN CYCLING — “I’m not saying it’s boring, but… it’s true that sometimes, two hours before the finish, you already know who’s going to win. This changes the perception a bit. Everything is much more controlled. But even when I was racing, it was controlled too: anti-doping tests, weight, nutrition, everything. Science has taken another step forward, that’s for sure. Nutrition and these aspects have changed a lot. There were checks before, but now there are even more. Everything has changed; everything is even more measured now. It’s another way of racing, that’s for sure, and the level is incredibly high.”
ON HIS/THEIR LONGEVITY — “People say I retired early… but I raced for 14 seasons. I retired from road cycling at 33 and then did another year in mountain biking. I don’t think I left before my time. I don’t know if Pogacar or the others will do the same. It depends on each of them. I started very young and I was ready to close a chapter.”
